Introduction
The OB-00006 Expandability Brownfield Concept Selection looks at the options available to convert or expand existing objects in the outdoor space and with what functionality for the implementation of the Smart City Infrastructure (SCI).
The term ‘brownfield’ denotes the existing designed public space in those zones in the LLS where no completely new design will be developed. Here, the emphasis will be on It converting or retrofitting existing objects. In contrast to the zones where new builds will be erected and the existing structures completely replaced (‘greenfield’), the implementation or laying, expansion or development of the SCI in the brownfield zones is more challenging because of the presence of the existing units. However, these have the potential for reuse.
The term ‘existing objects’ refers to every object (light masts, HTM masts, bus shelters, kiosks etc.) in the LLS area that consumes power. In the future, every object can potentially be converted into a Smart City Hub (SCH). The SCH’s building blocks can be housed in different support structures, even existing support structures. The design of the support structure and the exact geographic location affects the possible conversion and/or expansion.
Possible support structures are:
- MUPIs (advertising columns)
- Kiosks
- Light masts
- OLC boxes
- Bus shelters
- Beacons (Morales Boulevard)
- HTM masts
- TCS
- Street furniture
This Concept Selection is in the first place limited to the conversion or expansion of the existing urban lighting. Other support structures, such as existing kiosks, HTM masts, TCSs and so on, may be added later. The urban lighting consists of a support structure (the mast) and a fitting with a light source. This Concept Selection looks at the options available to: (1) convert an existing support structure; and (2) assess which fittings with what light sources need to be modified to be turned into a Smart City Hub. It may not be possible to convert all support structures and fittings with light sources into Smart City Hubs. One consequence is that there may be objects in a single zone that are not part of the SCI.
This Concept Selection does not answer questions such as: what type of SCH (combination of building blocks) with what AUX can be placed where; what needs to be modified; does the effort put into converting a particular type of object pay off; should we make modifications to the desired configuration; should it transpire that a particular preferred SCH is not possible in a particular place, can an existing object be replaced? These questions will be examined during the construction phase when the SCI will be further worked out in an execution-ready design for each zone.
Management summary
This management summary contains some crucial starting points (selections) that are described further in the document. The purpose of the table below is to clarify these starting points.
No. | Selection | Motivation |
---|---|---|
1 | Convert/not convert | The SCI will cover both new outdoor areas and areas where the existing land will be converted. |
2 | The degree of conversion/limit to convertibility | This concept selection contains the start of working out whether to convert or not convert. It shows that there is a limit to convertibility which is determined by a combination of aesthetics, design, technology, execution and costs. A final decision based on these considerations has not yet been taken. This decision depends on an in-depth analysis of existing acreage to be done at a later planning phase. How the building blocks for the Smart City Hub will be applied will be assessed for each type of support structure. |
3 | Relationship to the desired configuration, to replacement plan (or if something has just been replaced, what it the criterion for conversion?). | Fixtures designated for replacement in the OCL replacement plan must meet the specifications of the SCI (OLC + DALI protocol). |
4 | Replacement existing support structures | Support structures that cannot be converted but whose geographic location in the configuration require a certain type of Smart City Hub, must be replaceable. |
5 | Minimum conversion series size | Should it not be feasible to replace all objects in one zone at the same time, the minimum conversion size is determined by the series of light masts that are coupled to one OCL box (in relation to 24/7 activation of operation). |
